WASHINGTON – William L. (Bill) Armstrong, president of CCCU member Colorado Christian University, former U.S. Senator and congressman, and a longtime advocate for Christian higher education, passed away on July 5, 2016, at the age of 79 after battling cancer.

“Bill Armstrong is a giant in the halls of public service. Bill’s work as president of Colorado Christian has been marked by strategic courage and vision. He loved students. He loved his faculty and staff. It has been an honor to have him as a member president of the CCCU. The whole of Christian higher education marks this as a loss,” said CCCU President Shirley V. Hoogstra. “He has mentored many leaders, so his legacy of leadership will continue. I counted Bill a kind friend and advisor. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and the Colorado Christian community during this very difficult time.”

In addition to serving as both a Colorado state representative and state senator, Armstrong served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and two terms in the U.S. Senate. He served as Colorado Christian’s president from 2006 until his death, work that he said was “the most significant, energizing and rewarding work I have ever undertaken.”

Colorado Christian University has established a memorial website, which includes an online message book, to honor Armstrong’s life and legacy. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 at 10:30 AM in the Worship Center of Cherry Hills Community Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
