Messiah College soccer programs recognized by Congress

February 3, 2010
WASHINGTON,D.C.—The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution (H.Res. 1030) on Jan. 26, 2010, honoring Messiah College men’s and women’s soccer teams on winning the 2009 NCAA Division III national championships. The resolution was introduced by Representative Todd Platts (R-PA).

The language of the resolution states:

“H.Res. 1030: --Congratulates Messiah College's mens' and women's soccer teams on winning the 2009 NCAA Division III national championships; and --Recognizes Messiah College for excellence in academics, athletics, and character.”

Two Representatives offered comments in support of the resolution: Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) pointed out that Messiah is the only college or university in NCAA history to win both men’s and women’s championships in the same sport in the same year (an achievement that Messiah also accomplished in 2008 and 2005). Rep. Bob Bishop (R-UT) highlighted Messiah’s mission and vision and noted that the college is ranked as one of top ten best colleges for comprehensive bachelor degrees in the North by U.S. News & World Report.

Said Messiah College President Kim Phipps, "It was an unexpected honor for the Messiah College community to hear the success of our men's and women's soccer teams being commended from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Messiah's student athletes and coaches strongly embody our shared goal of pursuing athletic excellence and developing Christian character, both on and off the playing field. We certainly feel privileged by this Congressional recognition of our students' athletic and academic achievements--particularly in the important and distinctive context of Messiah's educational mission."
