Concurrent Breakout Sessions
Concurrent 1A: Making Difficult Business Decisions Without Abandoning Your Christian Mission
Change is difficult. It is even more challenging when it puts the livelihood of dozens of valued employees potentially at risk in the name of “institutional efficiency.” How can Christian higher education institutions achieve the increased efficiencies the current climate requires, while still adhering to our Christian values?
In this presentation, Madonna University President, Dr. Michael A. Grandillo and Dynamic Campus President and CEO Mike Glubke will tell the story of how Madonna University confronted this challenge, contemplated various options, and executed the decision to outsource information technology (IT) services while maintaining the dignity and respect of the entire IT staff.
Robert Wheeler, Vice President, Services at Dynamic Campus and Michael A. Grandillo, President, Madonna University
Concurrent 1B: The CCCU Financial Ratios Report and Communicating Financial Realities to Your Campus and Board
The session will begin with an update on the CCCU Financial Ratios Report, noting trends and comparing the financial health of CCCU institutions to private not-for-profit institutions as a whole. These are challenging times for the entire sector. Presidents must balance their role as truth-teller and the need to provide vision and energy for their campuses. Two CCCU Presidents, Chip Pollard (John Brown University) and Robin Baker (George Fox University), will share how they communicate financial realities to their faculty, staff and board. There will be time for questions, discussion, and comments.
Robin Baker, President, George Fox University, Chip Pollard, President, John Brown University, and Michael Williams, Vice President, Ruffalo Noel Levitz
Concurrent 1C: The Essential Value of Off-Campus Study to Student Formation and Campus Culture
Today’s graduates must be prepared to participate in a global economy with colleagues from many cultures and backgrounds. Off-campus study provides students with an invaluable opportunity to experience, work in, and learn about other countries and cultures. Your campus community also benefits when the students return with their expanded vision and worldview. In this session, your colleagues will share why they view off-campus study as an essential (not optional) component of Christian higher education and the necessity of finding a study abroad provider that supports faith-centered education.
Moderator: Stan Rosenberg, Executive Director, SCIO
Panelists: Brent Ellis, President, Spring Arbor and Paul Conn, President, Lee University

Concurrent 2B: Digital, Open Source, and Publisher Partnerships: How the Textbook Industry is Changing
Ten to fifteen years ago, Amazon changed the textbook industry by creating a secondary market. Another big change is coming. This time, the leaders in the textbook publishing industry have a plan to disrupt the secondary market. We’ll discuss the impact of these models to faculty choice, the used textbook market (Amazon) and to textbook affordability. Come hear how that impacts your students, faculty, and campus store.
Darren Campbell, CEO, Tree of Life Bookstores, Inc.
Concurrent 2C: Moving the Needle: The Call for Collaboration in Student Success
While the challenges of meeting the critical and unique needs of students continue to press in our colleges and universities, some institutions are realizing substantive success as a result of strategic comprehensive collaborative efforts. Most often, efforts to support students or improve readiness for their engagement are realized within “silo” environments, without thoughtful integration of planning and shared responsibility. This session will describe an increasingly successful approach called “Moving the Needle:” a comprehensive targeted strategic student success project that has resulted in changing campus culture from splintered to unified, from haphazard in approach to focused and intentional, from modestly successful to exponentially successful in regard to student and institutional outcomes. The discussion will focus on the practical examples of several CCCU institutions and include an emerging opportunity for a multiple institutional partnership.
Joretta Nelson, Senior VP/Owner, Credo and Susan Wooten, Senior Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Vice Provost, Anderson University (SC).

Born a little over 36 hours apart, Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray have been blessed with a lifelong friendship. They are no strangers to challenges. Some they have chosen, while others have been thrust upon them. Despite Justin living life from a wheelchair due to a progressive neuromuscular disease, he and Patrick conquered the Camino de Santiago, making their way across 500 miles from France to the Cathedral of Santiago. Justin and Patrick use many of the lessons to shed light on the inescapable love of God.

Spouse Program: The Essential Work of Friendship in a Digital Age
The book of James chapter 3 says, "Real wisdom, God's wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others." James, brother to Jesus and one of the founding fathers of the early church, goes on to say that, "You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with each other." (James 3:17-18 MSG.) Nowhere is this likely more true than on a college campus with its unique communities and the inexorable impact social media has on them. In this practical session Lisa-Jo Baker, bestselling author of Never Unfriended and Bible Study teacher of the popular study, We Saved You a Seat, will unpack what it means to do the hard work of getting along. Particularly as it applies to those in positions of leadership as well as understanding the friendship tensions experienced by those influenced by their leadership -- the vital population of young women across our campuses today. Bring your Bible and a pen as Lisa-Jo leads a practical discussion and study on why friendship matters, why friendship matters particularly to leaders, what challenges it faces and the practical tools for modeling our friendships after an ancient Jewish rabbi while living in a fast-paced digital age.
